World Mental Health Day

Every year, “World Mental Health Day” is celebrated on the 10th of October to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of a healthy mind. It provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on these issues to display their efforts and contributions.

Many elements of mental health have been called into question, and even before the 2019 pandemic, an estimated one in every eight people worldwide was suffering from a mental disorder. At the same time, the services, skills, and funding available for mental health remain in short supply and fall far below what is needed, especially in low and middle-income countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fueling short- and long-term stress and undermining the mental health of millions. According to estimates, anxiety and depression disorders increased by more than 25% during the first year of the pandemic. Simultaneously, mental health services have been significantly disrupted, widening the treatment gap for mental health issues.

Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14 . Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, for example, changing schools, leaving home, starting university, or getting a new job. For many, this time is exciting. However, they can also be times of stress and apprehension. If not recognized and addressed effectively, these sentiments might lead to mental illness in some circumstances. The growing usage of online technology, although beneficial, can also create new demands as connectivity to virtual networks at all hours of the day and night grows.

To raise awareness and address these challenges, WHO will work with partners to launch a campaign focusing on the theme “Making Mental Health and Well-Being a Global Priority for All”. This will be an opportunity for people living with mental illnesses, advocates, governments, companies, employees, and other stakeholders to join together to appreciate accomplishments in this sector and speak out about what needs to be done to achieve a Healthy mental state for all.
