High ponytails, scrunchies on her wrist, metal straws in her pocket, a cultural icon that stood for climate change and saving the turtles. Started by Emma Chamberlain, this was when most of us heard of scrunchies for the first time. But, contrary to popular belief, this wasn't the world’s first tryst with the popular hair tie. It is unclear whether this trend gained traction after 1998, when Winona Ryder starred in ‘Heathers’, and popularized the red scrunchie as a classic mean girls’ instrument or in the present day, where even the mention of a scrunchie sale drives people crazy.
After their initial heyday in the 80s and the 90s, they went in and out of fashion, returning after a decade, but only for a short amount. After the release of the ‘Sex in the City' episode where Carrie Bradshaw was critical of them, people stopped wearing them, and they didn’t return until a decade later when worn in real life by the likes of Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid.
Certain honorable mentions include To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which heightened the cultural impact of scrunchies. When Peter Kavinsky said “I like your hair down, you look cute”, and Lara Jean said that "He couldn't lose her favorite scrunchie.", I know we were all swooning. It is built on the idea of men and women wearing scrunchies on their wrists to signify their relationship status.
Stranger Things Season 3 premiered in 2019, at the height of the scrunchie rage, starring Winona Ryder and attempting to recreate the 90s, of course, it had to mimic the iconic hair accessory. Eleven having her little scrunchie moment, and Max always wearing her scrunchie on her wrist were the power moments we looked for. In fact, Vogue India also wrote an article titled, "Stranger Things Eleven’s scrunchie is the unlikely power accessory of the summer”, further proving my point.
